About Therapy

Hypnotherapy, Counselling and Psychotherapy

At Asiahypnosis we provide "talk therapies" and this include psychotherapy, counselling and clinical hypnotherapy. It is not uncommon for us to combine the therapies in order to get you back on track in the shortest, safest and most effective way possible. All our therapies are individualized and tailored specifically to helping you resolve your presenting problem.

Psychotherapy, counselling and hypnotherapy is effective in their own way for specific disorders. None is better or worse than the other. They are just different in their approach and perspectives. They use the same methods, in different ways, to achieve different results for different presenting problems.

We assume that most of those who are reading this, would have done a lot of research on the different types of talk therapies. Do not confuse these 3 main form of therapy with methods or tools of therapy. Methods of therapy can include cognitive behaviorial therapy (CBT), neuro linguistic programming (NLP), person centered therapy, past life regression and so forth.

Here is how we at Asiahypnosis, define and describe the differences between hypnotherapy, counselling and psychotherapy.

  • Psychotherapy requires the longest period for resolution. At times, for some presenting problems and personality, it could go on for years. It is not uncommon for people to be treated for more than 5 years for the same presenting problem. Psychotherapy is effective for treating mental disorders.

  • Counselling requires a shorter period for resolution. It follows a set pattern that has been established over the years through fieldwork. It usually focus on a specific crisis that a person is facing at that time. It is goal oriented and present centered. A counsellor's job is to help you resolve your crisis and at times, be your advocator for treatments and services that you need. Counselling usually will last only for a few months until your crisis is resolved. The duration and number of sessions at times are also determined and curbed by the organization that is giving you the treatment, your insurance coverage and perhaps your health provider. Counselling is effective for treating and resolving specific life's crisis.

  • Hypnotherapy requires the shortest period for resolution. In some cases, your presenting problem can be resolved in 1 session. In this sense then, it is the most cost and time effective among all the 3 talk therapies. It also accelerate the progress of recovery in psychotherapy and counselling. Hypnotherapy is effective for changing behaviors, eliminating phobias, resolving emotional issues and dealing with all psychosomatic disorders. For more information about hypnotherapy go to Clinical Hypnotherapy.

An American Health Magazine reported the following findings from a recent study that studies the effectiveness of the 3 talk therapies in resolving emotional issues:

  • Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions.
  • Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions.
  • Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions.

At Asiahypnosis, we believe that we need to address emotional, mental, psychological and physical state in a more holistic manner in order to affect lasting beneficial changes within a person.

Do I need help?

Almost everybody at one time or another in their life need some help with their mental health.

Knowledge and understanding of mental health have come a long way in the last 50 years. The current generation of older adults grew up at a time when therapies for mental health problems was not as available and accepted as it is today.

People were lead to believed they had to handle difficulties alone or only with the help of a close friend or family. Sometimes attitudes prevented people from seeking help. There was also the fear that seeing a psychologist, counsellor or hypnotherapist was a sign of personal, or moral failure, or weakness; losing his or her mind, or going crazy.

Today, psychotherapy, counselling and hypotherapy are sought by people of all ages. These therapies helps one to handle a variety of difficult situations and personal concerns. Often just a few visits are all that is needed. Before deciding to seek help, it is advisable to seek a consultation to discuss the situation and decide with your mental health expert whether psychotherapy, counselling or hypnotherapy is necessary. It is difficult to know for certain whether these form of therapies are needed. Only a trained professional can diagnose and determine the need for treatment.

Therapies may be indicated if a person has major changes in behavior:

* Withdrawing or refusing to participate in normal, everyday activities
* Being too anxious or panicked to participate in activities
* Displaying sudden outbursts of anger without a good reason
* Hearing or seeing things that are not actually present
* Increasing use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs
* Having constant feelings of sadness and disappointment
* Wishing to be dead or expressing suicidal ideas

Who can benefit from mental health therapies?

Those who are facing major changes in life often benefit from our therapies. Some examples are:

  • - A man who is diagnosed with an illness. He will need to learn to cope with the illness, make short- and long-term plans, and deal with family relationships.
  • - A person who has been the victim of a crime. In one case, a woman was robbed and physically assaulted. She thought she was doing fine, but a few days later a friend came by to visit and saw a look of terror and panic on her face. The friend pointed this out and suggested she see her family doctor, who arranged for short-term counseling.
  • - Couples facing major decisions. Financial or housing decisions, problems with family members or changes related to retirement might be reasons for a couple to see a counselor.
  • - A person suffering from losses. This may include loss of property, loved ones, job, trust, modesty etc.
  • - A person with obssessive compulsive disorder who spend hours washing their hands, or checking that they have locked the doors, or obssessed with a person or object, etc.
  • - Pre and post surgery patients who wants to recover faster or deal with the trauma of the surgical procedure. Not many people realize that the trauma from a major surgery can cause post-traumatic stress syndronme and so left to their own device, recovery can become highly compromised and may lead into depression.
  • - Phobias and other negative behaviorial patterns that adversely affect a person's quality of life.
